Setting Children Free
Parenting is not a tenured position.
It seems to me this is one of the most difficult aspects of having children. In the beginning you are their world and they only have eyes for you. In time, their wings grow stronger and their independence more confident. Letting go--watching them go, setting them free--can feel almost a dereliction of duty, but it is essential if they are to fly.
One of the more profound pieces of writing I've ever read was written today by my brother, Wade. It just so happens his blog post reflects on watching his children fly away. Here they are. Enjoy.
